Top Immunity Boosting Foods

As the cold and flu season is drawing close again, now is the time for doing all that you can to protect yourself properly. And one of the best places to start is by properly feeding your immune system so you can boost it’s power to fight off those unwanted pesky ‘bugs’ that can drag you down. This season, more than ever, with the H1N1 Virus (aka Swine Flu) promising to wreck havoc on large numbers of the world’s population, you need to give your body the best possible opportunity along with the recommended flu vaccines to be strong enough to fight off the effects of colds and flu that will be present all around you in your everyday life.

Read on as the top immune boosting foods and nutrients will be revealed to you to incorporate into your diet to help keep you healthy.

  • Vitamin C:

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid is a water-soluable vitamin which is essential for normal functioning of the body. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that protects against infection and enhances immunity. Vitamin C works by increasing the production of white blood cells, which fight off infection. It also works by increasing the production of antibodies and in particular, raises levels of interferon, the antibody that coats cell surfaces, preventing the entry of viruses.

Vitamin C sources include citrus fruits (oranges-grapefruits), broccoli, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers (red-yellow-orange-green), strawberries, kiwi, papaya, mango and pineapple.

  • Vitamin E:

Vitamin E is important to a healthy immune system. One function of vitamin E is that it enhances the production of B-cells, the immune cells that produce antibodies that destroy bacteria. In fact, research shows that people who eat foods that are rich in vitamin E tend to have a higher immunity.

Vitamin E rich foods are seeds, vegetable oils and grains.

  • Beta-carotene:

Beta Carotene enhances the functioning of your immune system. Beta Carotene works by increasing the number of infection fighting cells, natural killer cells and helper T cells. To enhance the availability of the beta-carotene in these foods, they should be eaten raw or lightly steamed. Getting the recommended 5-10 servings a day of fruits and vegetables will provide you with about 3-6 milligrams of beta-carotene.

Foods rich in beta-carotene include sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, spinach, turnip greens, winter squash, collard greens, cilantro and fresh thyme.

  • Zinc:

Zinc helps to prevent a weakened immune system. Studies have shown that a zinc deficiency can impair a number of white blood cells and platelets (blood cells involved in clotting), and can increase susceptibility to infection. Excessive zinc intake, however, may impair immunity and increase infections.

Get an adequate amount of zinc in your diet by eating zinc rich foods such as oysters, liver, lean beef, pork, turkey, lamb, lentils, pumpkin and sesame seeds, garbanzo beans and yogurt.

  • Garlic:

Garlic is known for its cold-fighting abilities. It increases the potency of two important cells of the immune system: T-lymphocytes and macrophages. The immune-boosting properties of garlic appear to be due to its sulfur-containing compounds, such as allicin and sulfides.

You can eat it raw or cooked – so start adding it to your favorite foods today!

  • Omega-3 fats:

The all important omega-3 fats are essential immune boosters, as they work by increasing the activity of phagocytes, the white blood cells that eat up bacteria. These fats also help strengthen cell membranes, thereby speeding up healing and strengthening resistance to infection in the body. To boost omega-3 in your diet, try adding ground flax-seed to yogurt, baked goods, cereals or smoothies or use unrefined, cold-pressed flax seed oil as a salad dressing.

Omega-3 fats can be found in foods such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna), flax oil and flax-seeds, omega-3 eggs, nuts and seeds.

Immune Drainers ~~~

Some foods or unhealthy lifestyle behaviors can make a person more susceptible to colds and flus. Avoid high-fat, high-sugar junk foods, as they can decrease the activity of the immune system. It’s also best to avoid too much caffeine (soda, coffee, tea, chocolate) as caffeine can undermine your body’s immune system and act as a diuretic, which will deplete your body of water. Also — DON’T SMOKE! – Smoking can impair your resistance as well as injure the respiratory tract, which makes you more susceptible to the flu.

As a reminder…..

pineapple-cut-in-halfFatty and oily foods can interfere with immunity. It affects the white blood cells directly and reduces the immune strength.

Limit your intake of high proteins, high fat diet, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, sweet foods to avoid weakening your immune system.

100+ Drinking Songs – I’ll Drink To That!

Lots of songs come to mind when it comes to indulging a little – or a lot – as the case may be, whether it be at home enjoying good times with friends and family, at a concert, at the lake or beach, or at your favorite tavern or night spot. An ice cold beer at the ballpark on a sweltering hot day, a margarita or daiquiri poolside or whiskey sour or martini at a social event. However you decide to enjoy the libation, music just seems to flow right along with it. Whether your idea of a good time is rock, pop, alternative, punk, country, folk, blues, jazz, soul, reggae, big band, hip hop, or something else, this should almost be a definitive list of music to choose from. It is by no means complete, but a decent compilation of songs that evoke drinking, either in the title or within the lyrics somewhere. With so many to choose from, I decided to leave out the songs that don’t have alcohol or drinking involved. Unfortunately this leaves out a lot of songs you’d probably find and enjoy playing from the jukebox at your favorite bar. * When shopping for produce, to get maximum benefits, buy organic whenever possible. Also choose fresh or frozen rather than canned, since canned is generally extremely high in salt.

** To avoid extra calories from fat and a high sodium intake, use herbs, spices, lemon or vinegar, rather than salt, butter or oil for seasoning.

*** Now that you know what’s good for you, it’s time to shop (or plant your garden), and get busy eating and enjoying these extra healthy foods!

FRUIT LIST

The following alphabetical fruit list has important fruit facts arranged in order.

For example, in the list of all fruits, if a fruit has a particularly high level of carotenoids and a moderate level of vitamin C, the higher nutrient found in the fruit (carotenoids) will be listed before the nutrient that’s only found in moderation (vitamin C).

Any concerns are in parenthesis. For instance, if the fruit has a high glycemic index rating, which might negatively affect blood sugar levels, you’ll see (glycemic).

And if preservatives, such as sulfites, are commonly used on a conventionally grown fruit or if it’s highly sprayed or waxed, you’ll see (preservatives), (pesticides) or (wax coating). In that case, it’s important to buy organically grown varieties of that particular fruit.

Alphabetical Fruit List with Nutritional Values (in order)

FRUIT NUTRITIONAL VALUES IN ORDER (concerns)
Apples flavonoids, fiber, C (pesticides, wax coating)
Apricots carotenoids, A, C, fiber (preservatives)
Bananas B6, C, potassium (glycemic)
Blackberries flavonoids, fiber, C, K, manganese
Blueberries flavonoids, C, manganese, fiber
Cantaloupe carotenoids, C, A, potassium
Cherries flavonoids (pesticides)
Cranberries flavonoids, fiber, C, manganese
Dates (glycemic)
Dried fruit (glycemic, preservatives)
Figs (preservatives)
Fruit juices (glycemic)
Grapefruit carotenoids in pink, flavonoids, C
Grapes flavonoids, manganese (pesticides)
Guava carotenoids, fiber, C
Kiwifruit C, fiber (glycemic)
Lemons flavonoids, C (wax coating)
Limes flavonoids, C (wax coating)
Mangoes carotenoids, A, C (glycemic)
Nectarines carotenoids, C (glycemic, pesticides)
Oranges carotenoids, flavonoids, C, fiber (glycemic)
Papayas carotenoids, C, folate, potassium
Peaches carotenoids, C (pesticides)
Pears flavonoids (pesticides)
Persimmons C (glycemic)
Pineapple C, manganese (glycemic)
Plums carotenoids, C
Raspberries flavonoids, fiber, manganese, C
Raisins (glycemic, pesticides, preservatives)
Strawberries carotenoids, flavonoids, C, fiber (pesticides)
Tangerines carotenoids, A, C (glycemic)
Watermelon carotenoids, C, A, B6 (glycemic)

Importance of the Fruit List

This list of all types of fruits is a great source of high fiber foods and many essential nutrients. Especially important are the phytonutrient-rich carotenoid and flavonoid foods high in antioxidents, plus vitamins A and C, folate, manganese and potassium.

Research shows people who regularly eat fresh fruit have a lower risk of many chronic diseases. And since fruit is delicious, nutritious and generally low in fat, sodium and calories, most fruit can play an important role in healthy weight loss and maintenance.

Raw fruit is also high in enzymes and high fiber carbohydrates which are important for good digestion, healthy bowel function and relieving constipation.

So let’s face the fruit facts, making the right fruit choices gives you the get up and go to get up and go!

10 Most Nutritious Vegetables

Why Are Vegetables So Important?

Some veggies are loaded with nutrients and even have anti aging properties. According to the latest scientific studies, five servings a day of the most nutritious vegetables can not only help you to stay young, healthy and trim, they can also give you spectacular protection against cancer and heart disease.

So scientists keep telling us to eat more fruits and vegetables – five to nine a day. But the vast majority of the population aren’t even getting three, much less nine.

While most vegetables are low in calories and good for your body and overall health, some are definitely a whole lot better than others and offer many more vegetable nutrients.

The Most Nutritious Vegetables

Usually the best way to get your vegetable nutrients is to buy organically grown veggies and eat them raw, lightly steamed or in nutritious soups or stir-fries.

The Top 10 List

    • Green leafy vegetables, such as kale, chard, collard greens, spinach, parsley and dark green and red leaf lettuce are high in carotenoids and best eaten raw in salads, on healthy sandwiches, lightly steamed or in nutritious soups.

    • Broccoli is good steamed, raw (as a snack or in salads) and cooked in soups, stir-fries and other dishes. Both the green flower heads and stalks are nutritious.

    • Brussels sprouts are best quickly steamed to preserve nutritional values and avoid releasing sulfur smells caused by excess cooking.

    • Cauliflower, because of its bland flavor, can be eaten as a raw snack or added inconspicuously to dishes like soups and chili to boost nutritional values.

    • Red and Green Peppers are great in salads and healthy stir-fries.

    • Garlic and Onions are most nutritious eaten raw in salads or healthy dips. But they also make great flavorings for just about any cooked dish.

    • Sweet Potatoes are delicious when baked and eaten plain (without butter). They can also be used in soups and stir-fries.

    • Tomatoes (actually fruit) are good in salads and on sandwiches. Cherry tomatoes make great raw snacks. And pasta sauce is a good source of tomato nutrients.

    • Green Peas are best eaten raw (especially snow peas) or lightly steamed. Add fresh peas to salads (including chicken and pasta salad), soups and stir-fries.

    • Carrots are sweet, high in carotenoids and super when grated into any kind of salad. Baby carrots also make good raw snacks.

Islands In The Sun - Songs With A "Tropical" Theme

The Heat Is On …..

The Surf Is Up …..

The Sails Are Set …..

Anyone thinking of an exotic getaway this summer? … Maybe Hawaii, maybe the Caribbean or Jamaica, how about the Cayman Islands or maybe up Alaska way to the Aleutians and the Cook Inlet. • Getting traffic to your site
  • Preselling with free ebooks
  • Preselling with articles
  • Autoresponders and follow up campaigns
  • Ad tracking
  • Affiliate marketing
  • ClickBank
  • Viral marketing
  • PDF book creation

It even throws in an incredibly amazing viral idea at the end.

Now the focus will be on the many topics that this ebook covers ….. in simple and easy to understand language ….. and in great detail I might add ….. and with examples as well as suggestions.

  • Search Engines

If the success or failure of your online business depends precariously on the whims of the search engines take a tip from publication.
Forget about them!

  • Getting Traffic

Take 3 separate ways to bring traffic to your site – using affiliates, distributing articles and creating ebooks. There’s a way to link all these together to produce a rapid multiplying effect which will increase your traffic by an exponential factor.

  • Pre-Selling with Free eBooks
There is no more powerful way to sell your product than by ‘preselling’ it with free and useful information, typically with a free ebook. This very informative publication explains how to combine the above booklet with “ebook re-branding” and article promotion to get massive distribution .And (as stated many times before) the book itself is free.So what is HE selling ?

A well written article providing valuable and impartial information about a product can spread like wildfire. Most marketers will then add their product link in the article resource box, but he shows you a better idea in his free book.
  • Auto-Responders and Follow-Up Campaigns
If you want to clinch a sale with your website visitor, you need to follow up and remind him/her of your product >>> ideally with a sequence of automated messages.

Before even thinking of hiring an expensive auto-responder service, check out the offer in this incredible booklet for an “auto-responder” tool and an ebook explaining the art of writing follow-up campaigns.

  • Ad-Tracking
How would you like to sell ad-trackers and earn commission simply by handing out a free ebook? The awesome guru of this Ad Tracking guide has come up with powerful traffic generation ideas in his free book – and then uses an ad tracker as a model of how he sells a product. This really is a clever way of promoting the benefits of ad-trackers to your readers – and selling them!

  • Ebook Re-Branding

Getting affiliates to rebrand a free ebook with their affiliate links is a powerful marketing weapon. However there is one glaring weakness in the system.

See how this insightful guru teaches you to remove this barrier in his free ebook The Ultimate Super-Tip which just happens to be “rebrandable”, of course.

Idiot Awards - Here's Your Sign!

Here are some actual accounts from across America of some not to bright folks – or to put it another way, intellectually challenged … simply … “dimwits“. They’re not the sharpest tools in the shed – some may even be close to 51 cards short of a full deck. Sit back and enjoy :)

A Mom’s Not-To-Bright Solution

I am a medical student currently doing a rotation in toxicology at the poison control center. Today, this woman called in very upset because she caught her little daughter eating ants. I quickly reassured her that the ants are not harmful and there would be no need to bring her daughter into the hospital. She calmed down and at the end of the conversation, happened to mention that she gave her daughter some ant poison to eat in order to kill the ants. I told her that she better bring her daughter into the emergency room right away.

Here’s your sign, lady - Wear it with pride.

Not quite eligible for employees of the month

Early this year, some Boeing employees on the airfield decided to steal a life raft from one of the 747’s. They were successful in getting it out of the plane and home. Shortly after they took it for a float on the river, they noticed a Coast Guard helicopter coming towards them. It turned out that the chopper was homing in on the emergency locator beacon that activated when the raft was inflated. Needless to say, they are no longer employed at Boeing.

Here’s your sign guys – Don’t get it wet – the paint might run.

____________________________________________________________________________

Stay in school kids … and pay attention

A man, wanting to rob a downtown Bank of America, walked into the local branch and wrote on a deposit slip, “this iz a stikkup - Put all yur muny in this bag.” While standing in line, waiting to give his note to the teller, he began to worry that someone had seen him write the note and might call the police before he reached the teller’s window. So he left the Bank of America and crossed the street to the Wells Fargo Bank. After waiting a few minutes in line, he handed his note to the Wells Fargo teller. She read it and, surmising from his spelling errors, that he wasn’t the brightest light in the harbor, told him that she could not accept his stickup note because it was written on a Bank of America deposit slip and that he would either have to fill out a Wells Fargo deposit slip or go back to Bank of America. Looking somewhat defeated, the man said, “OK” and left. He was arrested a few minutes later, as he was waiting in line back at Bank of America.

Don’t bother with this guy’s sign - He probably couldn’t read it anyway.

A picture is worth a thousand words or…..

A motorist was unknowingly caught in an automated speed trap that measured his speed using radar and photographed his car. He later received in the mail, a ticket for $40 and a photo of his car. Instead of payment, he sent the police department a photograph of $40. Several days later, he received a letter from the police that contained another picture, this time, of handcuffs. He immediately mailed in his $40.

Smartass – But you still get a sign.

Wisdom versus age

A guy walked into a little corner store with a shotgun and demanded all of the cash from the cash drawer. After the cashier put the cash in a bag, the robber saw a bottle of Scotch that he wanted behind the counter on the shelf. He told the cashier to put it in the bag as well, but the cashier refused and said, “You don’t look like you’re over 21.“ The robber insisted he was, but the clerk still refused to give it to him because she didn’t believe him. At this point, the robber, getting flustered, took his driver’s license out of his wallet and gave it to the clerk. The clerk looked it over and acknowledged that the man was in fact over 21 and she put the Scotch in the bag. The robber then ran from the store with his loot. The cashier promptly called the police and gave the name and address of the robber that he got off the license. They arrested the robber two hours later.

This guy definitely needs a sign.

Not following directions can be hazardous to your health

A pair of Michigan robbers entered a record shop nervously waving revolvers. The first one shouted, “Nobody move or I’ll shoot!” When his partner moved, the startled first bandit shot him.

This guy doesn’t even deserve a sign.
____________________________________________________________________________

Willpower versus a “higher power”

From a small town in Arkansas ~ Seems this guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he’d just throw a cinder block through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So, he lifted the cinder block and heaved it over his head at the window . The cinder block bounced back, hitting him in the head, instantly knocking him unconscious. It seems the liquor store window was made of plexi-glass. The whole event was caught on videotape.

Yep, here’s your sign.

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign…

I live in a semi-rural area (Weyauwega, Wisconsin). We recently had a new neighbor call the local township administrative office to request the removal of the “Deer Crossing” sign on our road. The reason being (and I quote) “Too many deer are being hit by cars out here! – I don’t think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore”.

Probably wouldn’t even know what to do with the sign anyways.

Stupid Warning Labels

Our lawsuit-obsessed society has forced product manufacturers to cover their “you-know-whats” by writing warning labels to protect us from ourselves. Some are funny - some are absolutely ridiculous, but all are guaranteed to stand up in court. Enjoy :)

1. Child-size Superman and Batman costumes come with this warning label: “Wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly.”

2. A clothes iron comes with this caution: “Warning: Never iron clothes on the body.” Ouch!

3. The instructions for a medical thermometer advise: “Do not use orally after using rectally.”

4. The side of a Slush Puppy cup warns: “This ice may be cold.” The only thing dumber than this would be a disclaimer stating: “No puppies were harmed in the making of this product.”

5. The box of a 500-piece puzzle reads: “Some assembly required.”

6. A Power Puff Girls costume discourages: “You cannot save the world!”

7. A box of PMS relief tablets has this advice: “Warning: Do not use if you have prostate problems.”

8. Cans of Easy Cheese contain this instruction: “For best results, remove cap.”

9. A warning label on a nighttime sleep-aid reads: “Warning: May cause drowsiness.”

10. Cans of self-defense pepper spray caution: “May irritate eyes.”

11. Both boys and girls should read the label on the Harry Potter toy broom: “This broom does not actually fly.”

Most Popular Board & Action Games

Board games, with their colorful packaging, enticing game boards and iconic playing pieces, are popular with just about everyone. No matter what your taste, there’s a game out there for you. Besides testing your knowledge (Go To The Head Of The Class), or skill (Operation), or luck (Trouble), they are fun to play and a great way to interact socially with others. Milton Bradley has been by far the leading producer of board games, followed by Parker Brothers. Ideal Toys was the main producer of action games during the 1960s and 1970s.

The following is a list of 70+ classic board and action games that have been favorites of ours from early childhood (Candyland) to adult years (Trivial Pursuit). Some are associated strictly with the baby boom generation (Rock’Em Sock ‘Em Robots), while others are playtime mainstays that have been around for decades (Monopoly).

Hopefully this will bring back happy memories of the games you played, in which you chanced it all at the spin of a wheel or a toss of the dice. After each game’s listing are the manufacturer and the year it debuted. See how many of these you remember :)

Games involving strictly cards or playing cards were left off this particular list.

Amusing Oxymorons That We Hear

Definition of Oxymoron

Oxymorons are literary figures of speech usually composed of a pair of neighboring contradictory words (often within a sentence). A simpler way of saying this is … An oxymoron is a combination of words that contradict each other. However, this is not always the case. The Webster Dictionary defines oxymoron as “a combination of contradictory or incongruous words”.

Oxymorons can be used for dramatic effect, such as crash landing and deafening silence. They can also be amusing or comical, such as in criminal justice. Clearly this is not an oxymoron in the true and strict sense, but the suggestion that it is oxymoronic is humorous.

Perhaps the most well-known of all oxymorons is Jumbo Shrimp, at least in the United States. Now in the UK, a Jumbo Shrimp is better known as a King Prawn.

Take a good look at the paragraph below – - Notice anything strange about it?

It makes some sort of sense, but it is loaded with contradictions as well.

These are called oxymorons. Now read the paragraph that follows.

Have you ever noticed that it’s simply impossible to find seriously funny oxymorons online? The only choice is to ask one of those paid volunteers at the library – the ones in the long-sleeved T-shirts – for an original copy of some obviously obscure documents that were found missing amongst some paperwork almost exactly one hundred years ago.

Best Fiber Foods & Colon Cleansing – Nutrition Basics

To function normally, the large intestine requires two nutrients: fiber and water. Fiber is one of the most neglected nutrients. As a result, we live in a constipated society. Most diets provide only 12 g of fiber. No wonder the average “transit time” is one week! For good health, the colon requires 25-50 g of fiber daily. Early signs of unhealthy conditions in the bowels include bloating and gas, dark, dry stool and painful defecation, migraine headaches, and acne on the chin, chest or back. Besides being an effective antidote to constipation, eating high-fiber foods is a low-cal way to fill your stomach. Being regular, by the way, means a “daily bowel movement

Here are some top picks for fiber:

Lentil soup, 1 cup >> 14 g
Chili, vegetarian >> 11 g
Figs, dried, 3 >> 10 g
Spinach, 1 cup, cooked >> 7 g
Multi-grain bread, 2 slices >> 6.5 g
Papaya, dried, 2 slices >> 6.4 g
Chickpeas, ½ cup, cooked >> 6 g
Black beans, ½ cup >> 6 g
Whole wheat pasta, 1 cup, cooked >> 5.6 g
Kiwi, 1 medium >> 5 g
Raspberries, ½ cup, fresh/frozen >> 4.6 g
Broccoli, ½ cup, raw >> 4 g
Brown or wild rice, 1 cup, cooked >> 4 g
Oatmeal cereal, 1 cup, cooked >> 3.5 g
Apple, medium with skin >> 3.5 g
Almonds, dried, 1/4 cup >> 3.5 g
Bran muffin, medium >> 3 g

Many of us assume our fiber intake is adequate if bread and pasta are part of our diet, but the refining of grains strips away most of the fiber – and most vitamins and minerals too. The whole grain – bran, germ, and endosperm – provides much more than fiber, including B vitamins, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. White bread has only 7% of the vitamin E and 13% of vitamin B6 found in 100% whole wheat bread. Many breads list enriched white flour as the first ingredient and add fiber (like bran or flax). Read labels to ensure your bread is made from the whole grain. This should be listed as the first ingredient.

If your body functions best on a low-starch menu, supplemental fiber is available in many forms. The best option is ground flax seed (or flax meal). One to four tablespoons sprinkled into hot or cold cereal, over salad, in a smoothie, or even just mixed with water will not only gently ‘exfoliate’ your colon wall and provide bulk for stool, but the soluble fibers bind to cholesterol, fat, xenoestrogens, and other toxins in your digestive system, removing them with your stool. Another option is psyllium husks or hulls. Ground flax and psyllium can be found at most drug and health food stores.

Liquid chlorophyll added to drinking water helps to loosen up the muscles of your colon. Chlorophyll is rich in magnesium, a natural and safe muscle relaxant. Add one teaspoon to a glass of water.

* Remember to introduce fiber into your diet gradually.

* Too much at once may cause bloating and discomfort.

SOME FIBER FACTS

  • Fiber promotes intestinal regularity and health.
  • Fiber can help lower cholesterol and body fat by absorbing fat and cholesterol from food.
  • Fiber reduces the amount of food you eat and helps you feel full for a longer period of time.
  • A high fiber diet lowers the risk of many diseases, most notably heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and certain cancers.
